The check valve is designed to prevent back flow. Fluid flowing in the desired direction opens the valve, while back flow forces the valve closed.
Differential pressure causes the spring to compress and the valve to open. Since the force increases as the spring compresses toward solid height, the differential pressure required to get the valve fully open is greater. The rule of thumb is 3 times the cracking pressure for full open.
